Turkey wins 6 medals in World Karate Championships

Turkey claims 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in championships

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey won six medals at the World Karate Championships in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

The tournament ended on Sunday night. Eleven men and nine women players represented Turkey at the championships.

Turkey claimed two silver and four bronze medals.

Turkish Men's Kumite National Team came second while Turkish Women's Kata National Team came third.

Turkey's Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu won silver in the women's 50-kg Kumite competition.

In the men's Kumite competition, Turkey's Alparslan Yamanoglu won a bronze medal at plus 84-kg while Ugur Aktas clinched a bronze medal in the 84-kg category.

Ali Sofuoglu, another Turkish athlete, bagged a bronze medal in Kata category, which makes him Turkey's first medal winner in the category at the championships.

Some 1,200 karate players from 139 countries participated.
