Turkey’s 1st indigenous microprocessor unveiled

Microprocessor, Cakil, to help reduce dependence on import of such products, technology minister says

By Gokhan Ergocun

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Turkish industry and technology minister introduced the country's first indigenously produced microprocessor, named Cakil, in the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF).

The microprocessor was developed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey's (TUBITAK) Informatics and Information Security Research Center (BILGEM) and the country's defense giant ASELSAN, Mustafa Varank said.

There are some major restrictions in the world regarding sale of microprocessors especially for defense industry, he underlined.

"Countries do not give these processors to other countries, especially for use in the defense industry," he added.

In the strategic fields, such as defense industry, some countries restrict technology companies’ sale of high-tech products.

The microprocessor production process takes very long time and the first products usually do not work, but thanks to the cooperation between TUBITAK, BILGEM and ASELSAN, the first products work, the minister expressed.

"From now on, we will reduce our dependence on [import of] such products in the field of defense industry much more," he added.

Visiting the IDEF on Friday, the minister also examined other defense industry products of several companies, including Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE), Roketsan, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and Havelsan.
