ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey's leading photographers and artists have voted in Anadolu Agency's Photos of the Year competition, choosing their favorite entries in the news, life and sports categories.

Ara Guler, the country's most popular photographer, selected for the news category an image of a Palestinian teenager who became a symbol of protests against the U.S. move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Taken by Anadolu Agency photojournalist Wisam Hashlamoun, the photo shows Israeli forces detaining Fawzi al-Juneidi, 16, in the West Bank city of Hebron on Dec. 7 following protests against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision.

In the life category, Guler voted for Cem Oksuz’s "Turkish Stars in Izmir," a photo of the Turkish Air Force’s aerobatic team performing daring stunts.

Guler made his name with his atmospheric black-and-white photos of Istanbul, depicting the city's wide range of emotions.

The veteran photographer praised Anadolu Agency, saying it "fills a very important place" in Turkey. The competition has "very good photographs," he added.

Bulent Inal, the lead actor of the popular Ottoman-era drama series Payitaht (Capital City), also voted in this year’s competition.

Inal selected the same dramatic photo as Aral showing Israeli forces detaining Fawzi, which he said "sums up everything".

In the life category, he picked Ali Jadallah's photo of "Disabled Palestinian Brothers" waiting to get prostheses in the Gaza Strip.

Anjelika Akbar, an acclaimed Kazakh-born pianist and composer who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, also voted in the life category.

Akbar selected Soner Kilinc’s photo of a meteor shower in Turkey's western province of Manisa.

In the news category, iconic musician Orhan Gencebay also cast his vote for Hashlamoun's Hebron photo.

In the sports category, Gencebay selected Abdullah Coskun's "Turkey vs England: European Amputee Football Federation European Championship". The photo depicts a Turkish amputee footballer doing a headstand using his crutches following the victory against the English team.

The first Anadolu Agency Photos of the Year contest was held in 2012. This year, 68 images with Turkish and English captions selected from over 750,000 photographs shot all over the globe were put to a vote in news, life, and sports categories.

Last year, 165,000 people took part in the voting.

This year's voting will continue through Dec. 31 at www.aa.com.tr.
