ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's crude steel production rose 5.1 percent on an annual basis in the first four months of the year, reaching 12.5 million tons, the Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TCUD) reported on Friday.

In April, Turkey’s crude steel production was up by 3.1 percent year-on-year, reaching 3 million tons.

On a monthly basis, the production for April decreased by 12.3 percent compared to the previous month.

The World Steel Association data showed that Turkey kept its position as the world’s eighth-largest crude steel producer.

China remained the world’s largest crude steel producer with half of global output, according to the association's report.

World crude steel production for the first quarter of the year was 426.6 million tons, up by 4.1 percent compared to the same period in 2017, the report revealed.

The World Steel Association is a prominent industry organization, as its members represent around 85 percent of the global steel production with more than 160 steel producers.

Crude steel is unrefined metal that is later worked for use in construction and industry.
