Turkey’s opposition HDP candidate elected Batman mayor
Mehmet Demir bags nearly 65 percent of votes in local elections, according to unofficial results
ANKARA (AA) - The opposition Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP) candidate has been elected mayor of the southeastern province of Batman on Sunday.
Mehmet Demir bagged 96,590 votes, while the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party got 41,976 votes, according to the unofficial results.
Earlier, millions of Turkish voters cast their votes in the local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.
