HATAY, Turkey (AA) - A Turkish aid agency sent humanitarian aid to the northwestern Syrian city of Idlib on Wednesday.

Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) officials told Anadolu Agency that they have sent five trucks carrying beds.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, confirmed the trucks entered Syrian territory from Turkey on Wednesday through the Cilvegozu border gate in southern Turkey’s Hatay province.

The aid will be distributed among Syrian families living in rural Idlib, and more truckloads of aid will be dispatched to the region.

Syria remains locked in a devastating conflict that began in 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity.

According to UN officials, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict.
