Turkish aid agency supports war-torn families in Yemen

IHH delivers food, including flour, sugar and rice

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey’s IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation has been providing food aid to people in Yemen, which has been locked in a civil war since 2014, the organization said Friday.

IHH, one of the country’s leading aid groups, has delivered food to 3,724 families since late December in various cities including the capital Sana’a as part of an emergency aid program, it said in a statement.

The aid deliveries included flour, sugar, rice, cooking oil, baby food and canned food, it added.

According to the statement, the economic and social structure in Yemen has collapsed and public institutions have been unable to provide adequate services to its citizens for months due to the internal turmoil and political instability.

As a result, IHH’s efforts have been focused on helping affected families who are struggling with enormous hardships, it said.

Yemen has been wracked by chaos since 2014 when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including Sana’a, forcing the Saudi-backed government to set up an interim capital in the port city of Aden.

A year later, Saudi Arabia and its Sunni Arab allies -- who accuse the Houthis of serving as an Iranian proxy -- launched a massive military campaign aimed at rolling back the rebels’ territorial gains.
