Turkish aid agency trains Mozambican meteorologists

5-day training in southern African nation aimed at minimizing negative effects of hurricanes

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s official aid agency provided training to 21 experts from the Mozambique Meteorology Institute in weather forecast, radar analysis, and weather meteorology.

The five-day training in the southern African nation, in cooperation with the General Directorate of Meteorology of Mozambique, was aimed at minimizing the negative effects of hurricanes in Mozambique, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) said in a statement on Friday.

TIKA pointed out that meteorology and weather forecasting are "of critical importance" due to extreme weather and climate events in Mozambique, where hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands were left homeless as a result of Idai and Kenneth hurricanes a few years ago.

Speaking at the ceremony attended by the TIKA officials, Aderito Aramuge, the head of the Meteorology Institute, said: "The continuation of this support is very important for us."

Aramuge also thanked Turkey for the support and training.

Pedro Alano Manguiss, head of the educational affairs, said they want Turkey's support to continue, adding that the staff trained better will inform the people of Mozambique better on the climate and weather issues.
