Turkish aid foundation builds school in Idlib, NW Syria

Humanitarian Relief Foundation says school will have capacity of more than 600 pupils

By Cem Genco

HATAY, Turkey (AA) - A Turkish aid agency announced Tuesday that they have completed building a school in Atmeh camp in Idlib, northwestern Syria.

Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) Syria Coordinator Erhan Yemelek told reporters that the school will open in a week.

It will have a capacity of 615 pupils and 23 teachers.

Yemelek said more than 200,000 Syrian children who sought refuge in camps in Idlib are receiving education in tent-schools.

"We are building a school inside Atmeh camp, in order to enable education in a safe and healthy environment," Yemelek added.

Syria has only just begun to emerge from a devastating civil war that began in 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity.
