Turkish expats celebrate 'Yes' win across the world

Worldwide street celebrations in Europe, US, elsewhere in the wake of Turkey referendum win

ANKARA (AA) - Turks living abroad celebrated in the streets late Sunday and early Monday after unofficial results showed a “Yes” win on an referendum back home.

In Colonge, Germany, the victory was marked as Turks drove around the city while honking their horns in cars adorned with Turkish flags.

Expats in Beirut cheered the victory with chants of “Recep Tayyip Erdogan” at a cafe.

“Thank God, we are so happy. The result is what we expected,” resident Yusuf Faysal told Anadolu Agency.

Another Turkish citizen, Hasine Akan, chanted “We are all Erdogan.”

Celebrations in Brussels took place along the Turkish-populated Chaussee de Haecht Street under police supervision as Turks navigated the area in chants and carried banners of Erdogan.

Voters in the U.S. state of New Jersey headed to the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party’s election coordination center in Paterson to celebrate the results.

“We don’t consider the election results as a conclusion, it is a beginning.” the head of the center, Yavuz Orta, told Anadolu Agency. Adil Bayat, a New Jersey-based Turkish businessman said, “Time is for unity”.

Meanwhile, revelers in Rotterdam, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Skopke, Macedonia, also took to streets to celebrate the victory.

Unofficial results show 51 percent of voters in favor of constitution changes to usher in an executive presidency.
