Cavusoglu says Turkey's efforts to provide equality for women and fighting violence against women to continue

ANKARA (AA) - One of Turkey's main goals is to strengthen the position of the nation's women at all walks of life and prevent all kinds of violence against women, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday, celebrating March 8 the International Women's Day.

"Thus, important legal regulations have been adopted in recent years for protecting women rights, providing and strengthening equality for men and women as well as elimination of violence against women," Cavusoglu said in a written statement.

"Our efforts in line with this purpose will continue uninterrupted."

The minister said Turkey has led the international community to endorse and sign the 2011 "Istanbul Agreement" which is the first international document to prevent violence against women in Turkey. The agreement is part of preparations for a broader agreement on the issue at the Council of Europe, according to Cavusoglu.
