Turkish jets hit PKK targets in Iraq, northeast Syria

Counter-terrorism airstrikes target PKK on Iraq's Sinjar Mountain and Syria's Karacok Mountain

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish Armed Forces hit terrorist PKK targets in northern Iraq and northeastern Syria on early Tuesday, the military said.

In a statement, Turkish General Staff said that security forces carried out counter-terrorism airstrikes around 2.00 a.m. (2300GMT Monday).

PKK targets located on the Sinjar Mountain in northern Iraq and on the Karacok Mountain in northeastern Syria were hit to prevent the terrorist group from sending "terrorists, arms, ammunition, and explosives" to Turkey, the statement said.

The air operation was conducted "within the scope of the international law" and "with the aim of destroying the hot beds of terrorism which target the unity, integrity, and safety of our country and nation."

Counter-terrorism operations will continue "resolutely" both inside and outside Turkey, the statement added.

PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015 and since then has been responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children.
