Turkish leaders open new Ankara metro line

New nine-station line will transport 30,000 people an hour when fully operational

ANKARA (AA) – A new underground rail line linking the Turkish capital’s Ataturk Cultural Center with Kecioren town, was inaugurated on Thursday afternoon.

A colorful ceremony for the new nine-station subway line, was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and various state officials.

Building and civil construction work for the Kecioren line, previously started in July 2003 under the coordination of Ankara Municipality.

According to officials, when the line is fully operational, over 30,000 passengers an hour could be transported.

The municipality said 300,000 people a day already use the city's existing subway lines.
