Turkish naval ships dock in Ukraine as part of drill

With 40 port visits in total, Blue Homeland 2019 military drill is first in Turkish Republic's history

ODESSA, Ukraine (AA) - Turkish warships on Wednesday docked at the Ukrainian port of Odessa as part of the Blue Homeland 2019 military exercise in seas adjacent to Turkey.

While in dock, the naval ships -- the TCG Barbaros frigate and the TCG Marti assault boat -- will also be opened for public tours at selected hours.

The naval drill began last week with the participation of 103 ships in the Black Sea, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean to test the Turkish military’s warfare capabilities.

The exercise, set to end on Friday, also aims to boost the effectiveness of Turkey’s command and control systems.

During the drill, the Turkish navy is visiting 33 Turkish harbors and seven foreign ports in the Black Sea. The visits seek to contribute to friendship and peace.

The 40 visits are a first in Turkish Naval Forces history.

Turkey told Greece the dates and locations of the exercises last December.

The drill includes 13 frigates, six corvettes, 16 assault boats, and seven submarines, seven mine hunting vessels, 14 patrol boats, as well as other navy vessels.

The drill, coordinated by the Naval War Center Command, was planned six months in advance in line with NATO rules and regulations.
