Turkish parliament head calls Greek forces 'inhumane'

Greek border units fired live bullets at asylum seekers, says Mustafa Sentop

By Emin Avundukluoglu

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's parliament speaker on Wednesday condemned the Greek security forces for opening fire at asylum seekers stranded in the Aegean Sea.

"I strongly condemn the inhumane and unlawful attitude of the Greek security forces who fired live bullets at asylum seekers," Mustafa Sentop said in a tweet, adding that a rights watchdog was monitoring the incident.

More than 130,000 irregular migrants have crossed to Europe so far after Turkey opened its borders, accusing the EU of not fulfilling the promises it made as part of a 2015 agreement reached on the refugee crisis.

The Greek reaction to irregular migrants and asylum seekers has been harsh, with many battered, tear-gassed and at least two killed by Greek security forces.

Turkey currently hosts over 3.7 million Syrian refugees, making it the world's top refugee-hosting country.
