Turkish PM meets Palestinian president in Ankara

Yildirim thanks Abbas for support following July 15 coup attempt

By Ozcan Yildirim

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has expressed his gratitude to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for Palestinian support following the July 15 coup attempt, Prime Ministry sources said Monday.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said Yildirim told Abbas during a meeting in Ankara on Monday that images of Palestinians with Turkish flags following the coup attempt had strengthened ties between the two peoples.

Yildirim also said the clear attitude of Palestinian authorities against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which is believed to have organized the attempted military takeover, was welcome.

At least 241 people were martyred and nearly 2,200 others injured in the defeated coup, which the Turkish government said was organized by followers of Fetullah Gulen. The FETO leader lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, U.S.

Yildirim added Turkey's support of Palestine in all areas would continue in the future.

Abbas, who arrived in Turkey for a three-day visit according to Palestine’s official WAFA news agency, said he was grateful for Ankara's support.
