ISTANBUL (AA) - A Turkish soldier was killed as a result of a terrorist attack in Türkiye's southeastern province of Sanliurfa, authorities said on Wednesday.
Artillerist Enes Gazi Ozdemir was injured after YPG/PKK terrorists opened “harassing fire” on the Birecik-Sanliurfa border on Tuesday, according to the Turkish National Defense Ministry.
He later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
The ministry conveyed condolences to the soldier’s family, the Turkish Armed Forces, and the nation.
Meanwhile, security forces “neutralized” four YPG/PKK terrorists, the ministry said on Twitter.
The terrorists attempted to attack Türkiye’s Operation Peace Spring zone when security forces targeted them near the Turkish border, it added.
Turkish forces use the term "neutralize" to indicate the terrorist in question either surrendered or was killed or captured.
Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018) and Peace Spring (2019).
In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.
