Turkish, US defense chiefs discuss Afghan situation

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish and American defense chiefs held a telephone conversation Wednesday to discuss current issues and recent developments in Afghanistan.

The discussion between Chief of the Turkish General Staff Gen. Yasar Guler and Mark Milley was made public on the Turkish Armed Forces' Twitter account. No further details were provided.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday welcomed the “notable progress” made in peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban.

In September last year, U.S. President Donald Trump canceled a proposed peace deal with the insurgents at the last minute because of the killing of a U.S. soldier in the Afghan capital.

At least 20 U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in 2019, according to non-classified figures from NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.
