ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's Water Works Agency (DSI) has dug nearly 600 wells in war-torn Syria and in several African countries to help around 2.5 million people access to clean water, the agency said Thursday.

Following Turkey's successful Euphrates Shield Operation that rid northern Syria of terror groups, the DSI has built 91 wells in there for 630,000 people as well as renovating 60 wells which were damaged by the war.

In addition to projects in different parts of Africa, the DSI has also built 96 wells in Mauritania, Northwest African nation to help 415,000 people access to clean water in cooperation with Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet).

DSI also have water well projects in Serbia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Albania, Montenegro, and Slovenia.

Over 2 billion people worldwide remain unable to access clean water; there is no clean water in the houses of each three people out of 10 in the world, the UN reported in 2017.
