Turkiye can only achieve democracy with Peoples' Democratic Party: Official

ANKARA (AA) - Turkiye can only achieve democracy with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), its co-chairwoman said Tuesday.

"I am clearly saying that Turkiye’s real meeting with democracy is only possible with the HDP. Everyone needs to know, see and understand this in this way. Our aim is to meet on minimum democratic common grounds," Pervin Buldan told her party's parliamentary group.

Buldan said they did not want Turkiye to be oppressed under the country's presidential system.

"We want this country not to suffer any more damage and the people not to be oppressed in the face of the one-man system anymore," she said.

She noted that the HDP was the name of the country’s future.

“Talking about democracy without the HDP is not the solution. The search for a future without the HDP cannot offer a new future (to Turkiye).”

Turkiye adopted its current presidential system of government in 2017 through a public referendum and put it into practice a year later.

The country’s next elections will be held in 2023.
