Türkiye condemns 'heinous terrorist attack' that killed 10 people in Somalia

ANKARA (AA) - Türkiye strongly condemned the “heinous terror attack" Wednesday that killed 10 people in central Somalia.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that many people lost their lives and were injured in the terrorist attack that took place today (4 January) at the central Mahas in Hiraan district of Somalia," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry extended condolences to "the relatives as well as to the friendly and brotherly people and the Government of Somalia, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," it said.

"We condemn this heinous terrorist attack in the strongest possible terms and wish Allah's mercy upon those who lost their lives.”

Two suicide bombers targeted two residential buildings in Mahas, a town in Somalia’s Hiran region, 307 kilometers (190 miles) from the nation’s capital of Mogadishu.

At least 10 people, including soldiers, were killed and 10 others wounded in the attack

Some of the wounded are receiving treatment at the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu, it said, adding Türkiye will continue to "stand by Somalia in its fight against terrorism."

​​​​​​​Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the bombings, which came as Somali forces, backed by local militias, are carrying out a major offensive against the terror group in the region.
