Turkiye's gas imports up 4.5% in February 2022

Natural gas storage volume declines by 36.2% to around 1.66 billion cubic meters in February

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkiye's natural gas imports increased by 4.5% in February 2022 compared to the same month of 2021, according to data from Turkiye's energy watchdog on Friday.

Natural gas imports amounted to around 6.27 billion cubic meters (bcm) from approximately 6 bcm for the same month of 2021, Turkiye's Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.

EMRA's data showed that the country imported 3.61 bcm of natural gas via pipelines in February, while 2.65 bcm was purchased as LNG, marking a decrease of 1.29% in pipeline imports and an increase of 43.5% in LNG imports.

Russia supplied the most gas to Turkiye with 2.35 bcm, while the US and Azerbaijan followed with 1.48 bcm and 737 million cubic meters (mcm), respectively.

Gas imports from Russia and Azerbaijan decreased by 1% and 22.6% respectively in February, but imports from the US grew by around 99.2% compared to the same period last year.

The country's total gas consumption also increased by 16.5% to approximately 6.83 bcm compared to the same month last year.

Household consumption grew by 29.7% to 3.51 bcm, and the gas usage in power plants decreased by 10.4% to 974 mcm during the same period.

The natural gas volume in storage in February 2022 decreased by 36.2% to around 1.66 bcm compared to about 2.61 bcm in February 2021.
