Türkiye's top diplomat to pay 2-day visit to Algeria: Foreign Ministry

Mevlut Cavusoglu expected to discuss ties, regional, international issues with Algerian president

ANKARA (AA) - Türkiye's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will pay a two-day visit to Algeria beginning Dec 10, according to the country's Foreign Ministry on Friday.

Cavusoglu is expected to be received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to discuss regional and international issues and ties between the two nations, said a ministry statement.

He will also co-chair the first meeting of the Joint Planning Group, formed to monitor implementation of decisions taken at the Türkiye-Algeria High-Level Cooperation Council.

The council was held under the chairmanship of Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Tebboune in May in Türkiye.


- Turkish-Algerian ties

Tebboune made his first presidential visit to Türkiye in 17 years on May 15-17, during which 15 agreements were signed between the two countries.

The last presidential visit from Algeria to Türkiye was in February 2005 by Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

A "Friendship and Cooperation Agreement" was signed in 2006 to improve relations.

The last presidential visit from Turkiye to Algeria was made by Erdogan in January 2020 when a joint statement on the establishment of a High-Level Cooperation Council was signed.

Seven cooperation agreements were also signed during Erdogan's visit in February 2018 -- two of which were commercial in nature.
