Turkmenistan hosts international media forum on regional dialogue

Online forum gathers representatives of international organizations, politicians, journalists from various countries

By Jeyhun Aliyev

ANKARA (AA) - Turkmenistan hosted an international media forum Wednesday via videoconference on regional dialogue with representatives of international organizations, NGOs, politicians, academicians, senior officials and journalists from various countries taking part.

The forum, broadcast from the Institute of International Relations of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan, focused on alternative channels for dialogue and interaction on the occasion of the country’s 30th anniversary of independence and 25th anniversary of permanent neutrality.

Speaking at the forum, the Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization, Hadi Soleimanpour, stressed the vision of Turkmen society and the country's foreign policy.

He said the policy of permanent neutrality as a main aspect of the foreign policy and cooperation in the region and beyond comes with "peaceful coexistence, cooperation, harmony and benevolence."

Soleimanpour underlined that the "peaceful coexistence" between cultures and ethnic groups as well as the "cultural harmony" with society, nature, the country’s own people and neighbors is the main value of Turkmen society.

He also stressed the importance of common and sustainable development in the region.

In 1992, Turkmenistan declared its neutrality as part of its foreign policy at the Helsinki summit of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and in 1995, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality resolution.

At the 106th plenary meeting on Sept. 12, 2019, the General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

- Regional cooperation

Turkic Council Secretary General Baghdad Amreyev, on his turn, said the significance of regional cooperation is "growing dramatically."

Noting that some people even think that "regionalism is replacing globalization," Amreyev said "globalization is alive and continues, while regional cooperation is growing by benefiting political stability."

He recalled that the Turkic Council, which was established 12 years ago, boosts the cooperation between its members and unintentional partners and aims to enhance regional dialogue and relations with other international organizations and agencies such as the UN.

Sedat Sagirkaya, the coordinator of Turkey's public broadcaster TRT Avaz, said the TV channel stands in solidarity with Turkmenistan and airs the culture, history and art of Turkmenistan to the whole Turkic speaking world.

"TRT Avaz has a mission to be Turkmenistan's window to the world," he said, adding the channel follows all developments in the country.

- Boosting strategic cooperation

Denis Afanasyev, Minister of Industry and Natural Resources in Russia’s Astrakhan region, in his speech touched on the relations between Astrakhan and Turkmenistan and mentioned projects implemented between Russia and Turkmenistan in recent years.

Afanasyev highlighted that the agricultural, industrial and textile fields are among the fastest growing and developing areas between the Astrakhan region and Turkmenistan.

He went on to say that the development of transportation routes, especially air transportation, is on the main agenda between the region and capital Ashgabat.

The Astrakhan region is interested in boosting strategic cooperation and strengthening trade between the two sides, said Afanasyev.

- Peace and trust

Vladimir Kazarezov, deputy chairman of Russia's interstate television and radio company Mir, said the broadcaster sheds light on the latest developments from the Commonwealth of Independent States, including Turkmenistan.

Kazarezov also recalled that an agreement signed last year with Turkmen state media bodies enhanced cooperation in the field of media and communications.

Merdan Gazakbayev, chairman of the State News Agency of Turkmenistan, said they "highly appreciate" the partnership and cooperation based on "respect and mutual understanding.”

"Peace and trust are exactly what humanity needs most," he said, adding these are the main principles of the partnership between Turkmenistan and its partners.

Alexey Nikolov, the director general of international news network Russia Today, said the dialogue is "extremely important in the time we are living now."

"A lot of time, we are being separated from each other and do not understand and hear each other," he said, noting that the problem of miscommunication and of not having access to information is very widespread nowadays.

"I hope together we will promote openness, dialogue and prevent the virus of intolerance," he said.

Senior officials representing the media bodies from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Tatarstan, Belarus and Korea also spoke during the media forum and stressed the importance of the promotion of regional dialogue.
