UEFA to investigate violence in Kiev-Besiktas match

European football's governing body accuses both teams over crowd disturbances and the setting off of fireworks

ANKARA (AA) – European football’s governing body launched a disciplinary investigation Thursday into Ukrainian side Dinamo Kyiv and Istanbul’s Besiktas following fan violence at a Champions League match this week.

According to a UEFA statement, disciplinary proceedings were opened over Tuesday’s match in Ukraine, where Dynamo Kiev defeated Besiktas 6-0.

The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body accused FC Dynamo Kiev of insufficient organization, crowd disturbances, setting off fireworks, and blocking stairwells, while Besiktas has been accused over crowd disturbances, vandalism, and the setting off fireworks.

Local media outlets also reported Tuesday that fans of two clubs had clashed before the decisive match in Kiev; more than 10 Turkish supporters were treated in hospital.

The 6-0 defeat for Besiktas eliminated the Turkish team from the Champions League after it finished third in Group B.

The disciplinary body will deal with the cases next year, on Feb. 2, the statement added.
