Uganda arrests 3 Congolese nationals for mass killings

Police say arrests come after 13 people killed this week

By Godfrey Olukya

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - Three Congolese nationals have been arrested by security forces in Uganda for allegedly killing 13 people in the last four days, officials said Friday.

Police said they were arrested last night in the southwestern Ugandan district of Masaka.

Herman Sentogo, the district government representative, said a gun, machetes and knives were recovered from them.

''The gun they had is not registered in Uganda. It has a Democratic Republic of Congo registration number. They have been using it to indiscriminately kill Ugandans which is unfortunate," he added.

Flavia Terumanyanga, the district military public relations officer, said the suspects were carrying multiple identity cards both from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"They had several identity cards from both Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. But we have established that those from Uganda were forged."

She added that while in custody the Congolese national confessed to have carried out the killings.

In the past, Congolese nationals have entered Ugandan districts and caused chaos.

Recently, they were involved in the abduction of a female American tourist.
