Uganda president’s son condemned for supporting Rwandan M23 rebels

State Minister for International Relations Okello Oryem denies that Uganda is involved in subverting Congo's government

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - The son of Uganda’s president on Monday was widely condemned for supporting M23 rebels based in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba 48, who is advisor on special operations to his father, Yoweri Museveni, posted a message on Twitter declaring sympathy and support to the rebel group.

Kainerugaba wrote that it is dangerous to fight M23, adding that the group is not a terrorist group but rather fighting for the rights of Congolese Tutsi. In earlier tweets, Kainerugaba said Uganda would back neighboring Rwanda in any fight.

The statement raised concerns that Kainerugaba is ignoring the basic principles of diplomacy and noninterference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Uganda’s State Minister for International Relations Henry Okello Oryem said: “Uganda doesn’t support M23. Uganda is seeking total peace in the DRC.”

Political analyst Swaib Kaggwa told Anadolu Agency that the tweets are a well-choreographed move aimed at keeping the general in the limelight and serve his political ambitions.

Ten days ago, Kainerugaba wrote on Twitter: “The only way I can repay my great mother is by being president of Uganda! And I shall definitely do it!”

In power for almost 40 years, Museveni has denied that he is grooming his son to succeed him, but analysts say he must be aware of his son’s ambitions.
