UK braces for another storm as death toll rises to 2

Meteorological Office warns of danger to life as Storm Corrie expected to make landfall

By Muhammad Mussa

LONDON (AA) - The UK is set to face another day of extreme weather on Sunday as a second storm is expected to make landfall in the coming hours amid warnings by the Met Office following the deaths of two people.

Over 130,000 homes and businesses across northern England and Scotland have been cut off from the power grid due to extreme winds and torrential rain brought on by Saturday’s Storm Malik and Sunday’s Storm Corrie, according to Sky News.

"Storm Corrie will bring very strong winds to the north of the UK, especially northern Scotland, on Sunday. This follows just one day after Storm Malik moves through, also bringing a spell of very strong winds,” a statement from the Met Office said.

"Storm Corrie will bring gusts of up to 90mph in exposed coastal locations in northern Scotland, with 70-80mph gusts more widely in the north. Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties,” it added.

On Saturday, a 60-year-old woman was killed after having been struck by a falling tree in Scotland and shortly after a nine-year-old boy was killed by another falling tree. A man was also injured in the incident and was taken to the hospital where he was treated.

Robert Coburn, emergency response manager for Red Cross Scotland, advised people in the north to stay indoors, to remain vigilant for the next 24 hours and prepare essentials such as food, water, heating and modes of communications should their homes be cut off from the grid.

"There are lots of things that people can do preparing - this afternoon, for example, prepare to stay at home. If you don't have to go out, certainly don't go out. Have your mobile phone charged. Have available battery-powered radio and torches, just in case you get a power outage. Have easy to prepare snacks in the house, bottles of water,” Coburn said in an interview with Sky News.

Storms Malik and Corrie have brought destruction to many coastal communities and towns across northern England and Scotland. Pictures posted on twitter by local residents show fallen trees and destroyed houses.

The Met Office has warned that Storm Corrie will last throughout Sunday and Monday and has issued several warnings for parts of northern England and Scotland.
