UK Labour leader signals resignation

LONDON (AA) – British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said early Friday he would not lead the party in any other election campaign as his party is set to suffer a crushing defeat in the polls

Speaking at his victory speech after winning his traditional seat in Islington North constituency, Corbyn said he would carry on leading the party during a “reflection process,” hinting at his resignation.

“I want to also make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign,” he said.

“I will discuss with our party to ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward.”

He said he would “lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future.”

Corbyn’s announcement comes as his Labour Party is set to suffer a major election defeat after an exit poll and early results suggested that it would lose more than 70 seats as Tories are set for a landslide victory.

Corbyn became the Labour Party leader in 2015. He has been a Labour MP in the same constituency since 1983.
