UK police declare 'major incident' after Leicester blast

LONDON (AA) – British police have declared a “major incident” following a reported explosion and fire in Leicester City, Sunday evening.

“There has been a major incident on Hinckley Road, Leicester,” Leicestershire Police said in a Twitter statement.

The statement said “all emergency services are currently dealing with this.”

“Carlisle Street and part of Hinckley Road have been closed Please avoid the area,” police urged locals to stay away from the scene.

It said six fire engines were at the scene.

East Midlands Ambulance Service asked people not to call unless there is an emergency. “Our service is particularly busy in Leicester at the moment,” it said.
