UK, Spain share desire to make progress on Gibraltar 'as soon as possible'

GENEVA (AA) - The prime ministers of the UK and Spain agreed Thursday on the importance of finalizing a "suitable" UK-EU treaty for Gibraltar "as soon as possible."

Rishi Sunak and Pedro Sanchez discussed Gibraltar during a phone call, said a statement by the UK Prime Minister's Office.

"On Gibraltar, the leaders agreed on the importance of progressing negotiations on a UK-EU treaty and concluding a suitable agreement as soon as possible," it said.

The leaders also welcomed "the strong and growing" economic, security and cultural ties between the UK and Spain as well as wider cooperation with European partners.

Sunak highlighted the importance of working together with Spain on issues such as tackling illegal migration and energy security, according to the statement.

They also discussed the situation in Ukraine and "reaffirmed the UK and Spain’s enduring support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s illegal invasion and President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy’s plan for peace."
