UN calls for easing of tensions on Kurdish referendum

‘Yes’ vote wins by 93 percent in illegitimate referendum in northern Iraq

By Canberk Yuksel

NEW YORK (AA) - The UN on Wednesday urged a cooling of tensions after Kurds in northern Iraq voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Baghdad in an illegitimate referendum.

"We are aware of the rising tensions as a result of the referendum in Iraq," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters in New York.

"We would like to see all parties do what they can to dial down the tensions," he added.

Almost 93 percent of those who took part in the referendum Monday voted in favor of regional independence, according to preliminary results released Wednesday.

The referendum faced opposition from most international actors – including Turkey, the U.S., Iran and the UN – with many warning the poll would further destabilize the region and distract from the ongoing fight against Daesh.

Baghdad, meanwhile, has consistently said the referendum constituted a violation of Iraq's Constitution.
