UN holds memorial for Ethiopia plane crash victims

Service commemorates UN staff deceased on March 10 when plane crashed six minutes after take off

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) - UN officials gathered in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on Wednesday to honor the colleagues who were victims of last month’s deadly plane crash in a memorial service.

The memorial was held at the UN Economic Commission for Africa for the 33 UN staff, who were among all 157 on board, including eight crew, killed after Boeing 373 MAX 8 plane crashed six minutes after take off from Addis Ababa on March 10.

UNECA Executive Secretary Vera Singer, some UN officials and staff, and religious fathers convened to pay homage for the lost souls.

The names of the victims, representing 17 countries, were read out at the memorial.

"Since the tragic accident, the UN has been working closely with the Ethiopian Airlines to mobilize the required resources and counseling for the victims' families," Singer told the ceremony.

The Ethiopia crash triggered a spate of measures for some countries by grounding the Boeing 373 MAX 8 planes.

Last week, Boeing CEO apologized for the crash and said the company supports investigation report -- released earlier -- putting the blame on Max 8 controls.
