UN staffer in Darfur, Sudan convicted of raping minor

United Nations and African Union mission condemns incidents, vowing to provide all needed assistance to victims

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - A UN staffer working in Sudan was charged and convicted of raping a minor girl in the troubled Darfur region, the United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) disclosed on Monday.

UNAMID said in statement given to Anadolu Agency that the national staffer of the peacekeeping mission was found guilty in court.

"On 26 November 2017, UNAMID received information that one of its national civilian staff members was arrested and charged with sexual offences involving a 13-year-old girl," said the statement.

"On 13 May 2019, UNAMID received information from the court that the staff member had been found guilty of the rape of the child," it added.

It also revealed that another UN staff has been accused in another case of child abuse.

"On June 27 UNAMID received another allegation of sexual abuse against a former national staff member," it added.

UNAMID condemned the incidents, confirming that it would provide all the needed assistance to the victims and their families.
