ANKARA (AA) - Two oil tankers attacked earlier on Thursday in the Gulf of Oman were still ablaze, Iranian local media reported.

Iranian Press TV and Fars News Agency had reported that two oil tankers had been attacked in the Gulf of Oman.

After the explosion, the two tankers called for emergency assistance of the countries around the Gulf.

One of the tankers began to sink, Iran’s state TV reported citing local sources.

At least 44 people in the tankers were evacuated and transferred to Bandar-e-Jask port in southern Hormozgan province of Iran, according to IRNA, the official news agency of Iran.

The two tankers, the Marshal Islands-flagged and the Panama-flagged, were on their ways to Taiwan and Singapore from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, respectively, IRNA reported.

At least one of the tankers attacked near Strait of Hormuz was operated by a Japanese company, Kyodo News reported Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko as saying.

The tanker is operated by Tokyo-based Kokuka Sangyo Co., according to Kyodo citing the company.

Seko said that all crew members left the ship, adding that no one was injured.

He also instructed the Japanese officials to gather information over the attack.

However, late last month, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said four vessels, including two oil tankers, were hit by sabotage attacks near its territorial waters, without blaming anyone for the attacks.

Saudi Arabia also said military drones carried out attacks on two oil pump stations on the East-West pipeline, which carries oil from Yanbu port on the country's Red Sea coast.

Riyadh blamed Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen for the attacks.
