LONDON (AA) - A girl has died after a car drove into a school building in London, according to police.

"We can now confirm that sadly a child has died following an incident where a car collided with a building at a school in Wimbledon," Merton Police said in a statement on Thursday.

Officers were called at 9.54 a.m. local time because of reports that a car collided with a building at the Study Preparatory School in Camp Road, Wimbledon.

Firefighters and ambulances are also supporting emergency services.

Police said earlier that nine people, including seven children, were injured at the primary school.

The Merton Council asked the public to avoid the area to allow access to emergency services.

"We are not treating this incident as terror-related," police said after the incident, adding that an investigation was underway.

Merton Police later said the driver, a woman aged in her 40s, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident," it added.

Local MP Stephen Hammond said on Twitter that a major incident had been declared in the area.
