EDIRNE/VAN, Turkey (AA) - At least 1,028 undocumented migrants were held across Turkey on Wednesday, according to security sources.

In Basciftlik in the eastern Van province, seven Afghan nationals were held while trying to enter Turkey illegally, said the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The Afghan group included three children, the sources added.

In the western Edirne province, 213 undocumented migrants were held, the sources said.

The sources added that the migrants included Libyans, Algerians, Palestinians, Iraqis, Pakistanis, Afghans, Bangladeshis, Eritreans, and Syrians.

Separately, 808 more undocumented migrants were held by border security forces, said the Turkish General Staff.

Out of the 808, 621 migrants were held trying to cross the Turkish-Syrian border, while the rest were held around the Turkish-Iranian and Turkish-Greece borders.

Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria.
