NEW YORK (AA) - Four people were killed and two others injured Monday night in a mass shooting in the US city of Philadelphia, according to media reports.

Police said there were multiple gunshots in the Kingsessing section of southwest Philadelphia and a suspect was in custody.

The male suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest and was armed with a rifle and a handgun, they said.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that the suspect has been taken into custody and his rifle and handgun have been recovered.

Outlaw said that three of the victims were aged between 20 and 59, while the fourth could be aged between 16 and 21.

The two injured were children aged two and 13 and they are in a stable condition, she added.

The commissioner said that the suspect’s motives were not immediately known.

Another person was also held by the police who “acquired a gun somehow, don't know how, and picked up the gun and returned fire in the direction of the shooter that we have in custody. So, we're still trying to sort everything out,” said Outlaw.

“We have three guns recovered, two people in custody,” she added.
