UPDATE - 7 injured in Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Tatarstan region

MOSCOW (AA) - Thirteen people, including two children, were injured Tuesday in the first-ever Ukrainian drone attack against Russia's Tatarstan region, according to the Russian state news agency, TASS.

"Five were provided with the medical assistance and dismissed. Eight people were hospitalized, the condition is mild and moderate, there is no threat to life, all necessary medical care is provided," said the agency, citing the regional Health Ministry.

Separately, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said one of the injured is a national -- a man born in 2007 who received a wound of "moderate severity."

The attack was carried out against a complex of industrial and production facilities in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone and the city of Nizhnekamsk, 210 kilometers (130 miles) from the regional center in Kazan, the administration of the zone, it said on Telegram.

"Today, at 05:45 a.m., two drones struck the Alabuga student resident. Indeed, they are attacking shopping malls in Moscow, they are attacking residential areas in Belgorod, they are attacking student residences at 05:45 in the morning in Alabuga. It is against such people that we are conducting a special military operation. These drones were equipped with equipment from NATO countries," it added.

The Russian Investigative Committee launched an investigation following the attack "to establish all the circumstances of the incident and the persons involved in the crimes."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Kyiv "continues its terrorist activity," noting that the Russian military is “working to minimize this threat, and subsequently completely eliminate it."

Several plants were on fire as a result of the attack and emergency services were dealing with the consequences, according to multiple reports.

Alabuga is the largest and most successful special economic zone of industrial and production type in Russia, and has several large plants in its territory.
