VAN/AYDIN/KIRKLARELI, Turkey (AA) – At least 229 irregular migrants were held in Turkey over the past day, authorities said on Thursday.

A total of 158 irregular migrants were found in a truck that was stopped for a check on a highway in the eastern Van province, according to the provincial police department.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested, it added.

In the northwestern Kirklareli province, 39 irregular migrants who entered Turkey illegally were held by security teams, a security source said.

They included Iraqi, Syrian and Afghan nationals, said the source, requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

In the northwestern Tekirdag province, 32 irregular migrants were found in a bus stopped near the border with Greece.

All the individuals were sent to provincial migration offices after routine checks.


- Asylum seekers rescued

In three separate operations, Turkish forces rescued 62 asylum seekers who were pushed back into Turkish territorial waters by Greek authorities.

A total of 19 stranded asylum seekers were rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard Command off the coast of Turkey’s southwestern Aydin province.

In the southwestern Mugla province, 15 asylum seekers were rescued off the coast of Marmaris after they were pushed back by Greek forces into Turkish territorial waters in the Aegean Sea.

Turkish forces rescued 28 more asylum seekers pushed back by Greece near Menderes district in Izmir.

All the asylum seekers were transferred to provincial migration offices.
