More than 80 killed, 100 injured in truck bombing in capital Mogadishu on Saturday

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - More than 80 people have been killed and 100 injured as the death toll from Saturday's bombing in the Somali capital Mogadishu continues to rise, emergency officials said Sunday.

Abdulkadir Abdirahman, Mogadishu's ambulance service director, told local media 85 people had been killed in the blast.

Omar Mahamud, a police sergeant speaking to Anadolu Agency over the phone, confirmed more than 80 people had been killed in the blast, adding that the casualties include women, children, students and the elderly.

Local media also reported more than 100 people were killed while the government has yet to confirm the death toll.

Hospital sources confirmed to Anadolu Agency, on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, that more than 100 people were wounded.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed announced three days of mourning in Mogadishu.

A truck full of explosives exploded at a busy intersection in Mogadishu on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Omar Ibrahim, 25, an eyewitness, told Anadolu Agency "I saw destruction and dead bodies lying around the scene."

No group has yet claimed responsibly for the attack, but insurgent group al-Shabaab had claimed recent attacks in Somalia.

Turkey and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the attack on Saturday.
