ANKARA (AA) - Four people, including three children, were killed and three others injured in an elephant attack in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Saturday.
The attack occurred late Friday in the Balukhali camp in the coastal city of Cox’s Bazaar, the UN migration agency in Bangladesh said on its Twitter account.
One of the girls, 5 years old, died on the spot, while a 13-year-old girl later succumbed to her wounds at the hospital, the agency added.
Since Aug. 25, some 536,000 Rohingya have crossed from Myanmar's western state of Rakhine into Bangladesh, according to the UN.
The refugees are fleeing a military operation in which security forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.
According to Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, around 3,000 Rohingya have been killed in the crackdown.
The Rohingya, described by the UN as the world's most persecuted people, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012.
