ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) - Airports in two cities of Ethiopia’s Amhara state were targeted in rocket attacks late on Friday, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
Amhara state neighbors Tigray, where the Ethiopian military is engaged in an offensive against forces of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Rockets fired by TPLF forces caused unspecified partial damage in "the airport areas" in Gondar and Bahir Dar, a government spokesperson said on Twitter.
"In the late hours of Nov. 13, 2020, a rocket was fired towards Bahir Dar & Gondar cities. As a result, the airport areas have sustained damages," read the tweet.
It said the TPLF is using "the last of the weaponry within its arsenals."
"Details of the incident are currently under investigation," the spokesperson said.
Sources told Anadolu Agency the situation in both cities had calmed down following last night's attacks.
The Ethiopian government launched an operation against TPLF forces in Tigray after they attacked the federal army’s northern command on Nov. 4.
