ANKARA (AA) – Negotiations have begun with the hijackers of a Libyan passenger plane that was diverted to Malta on Friday, according to reports in the Maltese media.

According to Libyan Transportation Minister Milad Matouq, negotiations have begun at Malta’s international airport between local authorities and the hijackers to ascertain the latter’s demands.

The plane was hijacked by two individuals, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat reportedly told state media.

The Afriqiyah Airways plane is reportedly carrying 118 passengers.

"Informed of potential hijack situation of a Libya internal flight diverted to Malta," Muscat tweeted.

"Security and emergency operations standing by," he added.
