UPDATE - Mayor linked to terror probe detained in eastern Turkey

UPDATES WITH ARRESTS IN AGRI PROVINCE

SIIRT, Turkey (AA) - Police detained the mayor of the southeastern Turkish city of Siirt early Wednesday as part of a terrorism-linked probe, according to a police official.

According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to media, the arrest of Siirt Mayor Tuncer Bakirhan, who belongs to the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), a sister party of the national opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), came after the Siirt Public Prosecutor's Office issued a warrant as part of an investigation into the PKK terrorist group.

Police also searched Bakirhan's home and his municipality office, the source said.

In Agri province, police arrested the heads of the HDP and the DBP in Patnos district on Wednesday, a police official in the eastern province said.

According to the official, who spoke under similar condition of anonymity, Vahyettin Ilgun, from the HDP, and the DBP's Omer Narcin were accused of membership of a terrorist organization and making terrorist propaganda.

Last month, Diyarbakir's BDP co-Mayors Gulten Kisanak and Firat Anli, who also a city council member, were remanded in custody as part of an investigation into terrorism.

The Chief Prosecutor's Office in Diyarbakir said Kisanak was arrested for being a member of an armed terrorist group.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July 2015.

Since then, nearly 800 members of the security forces have been martyred and more than 310 civilians, including women and children, killed. Around 10,000 PKK terrorists have been killed or apprehended.
