UPDATE - Netherlands: Turkish families get threatening letters

Letters warn against going to mosque

ADDS ZAANDAM CITY MAYOR’S REMARKS

By Abdullah Asiran

ZAANDAM, Netherlands (AA) - Two Turkish families living in the Netherlands have received threatening letters with Islamophobic content, local police confirmed Thursday.

According to the Dutch media, the families, who are neighbors and live in the city of Zaandam north of Amsterdam, found the letters on their doorsteps with swastika symbols drawn on them.

The letters said: "If you ever go to a mosque again, this will be your end."

Zaandam City Mayor Jan Hamming said after visiting the families that they would not tolerate these kinds of threats.

In a written statement, Hamming emphasized that the threats and hate incidents were totally unacceptable, stating that they want everyone -- regardless of their religion, race or gender -- to live in peace and safety in the community.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, district police spokesperson Wendy Boudewijn said an investigation had been launched into the incident following a complaint filed by the families.

There is no information about the suspects, Boudewijn added.
