MARDIN, Turkey (AA) - At least one civilian was killed, and a dozen others including military personnel were wounded in a car bomb attack by the terrorist PKK group on a district gendarmerie headquarters in the southeastern province of Mardin, according to a military source on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Halil Ibrahim Sevimli, a 39-year-old lorry driver, who was traveling on the highway near the military base in Omerli at the time of the explosion, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media.

The wounded including three soldiers have been taken to hospital following the attack on the military base in Omerli, the source added.

The blast at around 8:23 pm local time [1723GMT] left a crater on a highway near the base, causing material damage to the headquarters and nearby buildings, he added.

The highway linking Omerli and Midyat towns was closed off following the explosion, and an operation has been launched to nab the terrorists.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization also by the U.S., and the EU -- resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015.

Since then, nearly 600 security personnel, including troops, police officers, and village guards, have been martyred, and more than 5,000 PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
