EDIRNE, Turkey (AA) - At least 438 undocumented migrants were detained across Turkey, a security source said Monday.
In Edirne province, 278 undocumented migrants were nabbed during a gendarmerie patrol in Orhaniye, Bosnakoy, Ipsala and Meric districts, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.
Among the migrants were Syrian, Moroccan, Palestinian, Iraqi, Pakistani, Afghan and Bangladeshi nationals who were later taken to a provincial migration authority, the source added.
In eastern Erzurum province, 160 undocumented Afghan and Pakistani migrants were arrested at different locations while they were walking in groups.
Turkey has been a main route for refugees and asylum seekers trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the Syrian civil war.
