TRENTON, Canada (AA) – A man who went on a weekend shooting spree in Toronto, killing two and wounding 13, was identified Monday as 29-year-old Toronto resident Faisal Hussain.

Hussain’s parents said in a statement that their son “had severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life.

“The interventions of professionals were unsuccessful. Medications and therapy were unable to treat him. While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end.”

About 10 p.m. Sunday in the busy Greektown area of Toronto, a lone male with a handgun walked down the sidewalk and calmly shot into crowds. The Danforth area where the shooting took place is a popular restaurant and shopping spot. Police were called and the gunman, identified as Hussain, exchanged gunfire and the suspect was killed.

Reese Fallon of Toronto, an 18-year-old who was planning to attend a nursing course in the fall, was shot dead, as was a 10-year-old girl from the Toronto area whose name was not released. Eight women and the same number of men were shot, including the shooter.

Police have still not uncovered a motive for the crime.

A former commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police said investigators would seek to find if Hussain was a lone wolf and how he accessed a handgun, among other questions.

“Was he inspired by some terrorist group?” Chris Lewis said. “Was this a specific vendetta to kill a specific person and then he shot everyone else in his path?”

While the motive remains unknown, the National Council of Canadian Muslims, a civil liberties and advocacy organization, issued a press release Monday condemning the attack.

“We are shocked and angered by this shooting attack in Toronto,” the release said. “This was a horrific act of violence. We urge everyone to wait for the police investigations to provide answers about this devastating situation before speculating about a motive.”
