ANKARA (AA) - The opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader on Wednesday called on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to hold a global summit in Turkey on developments in the Middle East.

Devlet Bahceli told reporters at his party's news conference in capital Ankara that he backs Turkey’s expected military operation east of the Euphrates River in Syria to fight terrorism.

"Turkish nation wants it," he said.

Bahceli also said that he is not in favor of Turkey on establishing a dialogue with Syria's Bashar al-Assad regime under any circumstance.

He stressed that Turkey has proven its important role as a "strong state" with regards to its contributions and presence in the Middle East.

Syria has only just begun to emerge from a devastating conflict that began in 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed or displaced in the conflict, mainly by regime airstrikes targeting opposition-held areas.

A mission east of the Euphrates, which Turkey’s leadership has been suggesting for months, would follow two successful cross-border Turkish operations into Syria since 2016 -- Operations Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch -- to eradicate the presence of YPG/PKK and Daesh terrorists near Turkey’s borders.

U.S. President Donald Trump last week made the surprise announcement that the U.S. would withdraw its troops from Syria. The decision followed Trump's phone call with Erdogan in which the two leaders agreed on the need for more effective coordination over the civil war-torn country.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women and children. The YPG is its Syrian branch.
